Sustainable Fashion Show and Clothes Swap
Empowering Youth for a Greener Future
The Youth Climate Ambassadors for Wales (YCA) and the Young Peace Ambassadors (YPA) recently held a transformative event: the Sustainable Fashion Show and Clothes Swap. This innovative, youth-led gathering took place on October 13, 2024, at Cardiff’s historic Temple of Peace and Health, offering a free and impactful experience that encouraged visitors to rethink their approach to fashion in support of the environment.

Inspiring Youth Action in Wales
The YCA and YPA are empowering Welsh youth aged 13 to 25 to become active voices for sustainable change. With the support of the Welsh Centre for International Affairs and Climate Cymru, these ambassadors are committed to challenging fast fashion and promoting responsible consumption. The YCA is currently backed by the Young Gamechangers Fund, a collaborative initiative by the Co-op Foundation and #iwill Fund, delivered through Restless Development and the Global Fund for Children.
According to Michaela Rohmann, YCA Coordinator, "This event was a true testament to the creativity and dedication of these young people. From designing sustainable outfits to organizing the catwalk, they managed every aspect. They wanted to show that sustainable fashion is not just a concept but a real alternative."

The Environmental Toll of Fast Fashion
Fast fashion contributes over 10% of global carbon emissions, more than flights and shipping combined. With 2,700 liters of water needed for a single cotton T-shirt and 85% of textiles ending up in landfills annually, the need for change is undeniable. "Most people don’t realize the hidden costs behind a cheap garment," shared Freya, a member of the YCA. "Beyond the environmental footprint, fast fashion often involves exploitation—issues we can’t afford to ignore."

Showcasing Sustainable Fashion
The fashion show featured original designs by local talents like Ophelia Dos Santos and YCA member Imogen Ruth Lloyd Kingston. YCA Chair Yolay Rees-McPherson introduced the event with a call for sustainable fashion and ethical practices, while designs made from sustainable materials emphasized reusing and upcycling. A standout piece, a skirt crafted from plastic shopping bags by Imogen, delivered a strong environmental message. "I wanted the transparent bags to encourage people to look behind the scenes of the fashion industry," Imogen explained. Harpist Elin Lloyd provided a stunning musical backdrop as the youth ambassadors showcased over 15 eco-conscious designs.

Engaging the Community
The event welcomed over 50 attendees, including students, professionals, and families, and featured interactive stalls from organizations like Climate Cymru and Peace Action Wales, sparking conversations about conscious consumerism. Even BBC Wales presenter Sabrina attended, supporting the event as part of her personal commitment to avoid buying new clothes this year. The Clothes Swap was especially popular, giving attendees a chance to refresh their wardrobes with pre-loved items, reducing waste and promoting sustainable choices

Lasting Impact
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of those surveyed saying, "After today’s event, I will be more conscious and sustainable in my fashion choices." The YCA and YPA have plans to build on this success by focusing on new initiatives, including campaigns on water pollution, peace education projects, and attending EU delegation gatherings.
This event showcased the power of youth-led action in tackling real-world issues and highlighted the sustainable fashion movement as a catalyst for change.
