Youth Climate Ambassadors for Wales collaborate with National Museum Wales
The Youth Climate Ambassadors for Wales (YCA) are excited to be working with the National Museum Wales on a new pop-up exhibition exploring the power of nature-based solutions in tackling some of the most pressing challenges we face today.
Focusing on the role of floodplains along rivers in Wales, the exhibition will highlight how restoring and protecting natural landscapes can help manage floods, improve water quality, and boost biodiversity. Nature-based solutions, such as reconnecting rivers to their floodplains, not only protect communities but also create thriving habitats for wildlife.
Hands-on engagement at St Fagan's
The collaboration has already brought the YCA and the Museum together at the Celebration of Nature event at St Fagans. At this lively festival, YCA members ran a stall inviting young people to reimagine a better future with the help of Lego. Children and families built rivers, meadows, and forests, sparking conversations about how nature itself can provide solutions to the climate and ecological crises.
This interactive activity tied into the YCA’s ongoing petition, which calls for greater use of nature-based flood management in Wales. By encouraging others to think creatively about the future, the YCA are amplifying the importance of these solutions for both people and the planet.
Behind the scenes at the Museum
As part of the project, YCA members have also had the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at National Museum Cardiff. Guided by Heather and other curators, they explored the Museum’s collections, selecting specimens that will form part of their upcoming pop-up exhibition. These specimens will help bring to life the stories of Welsh rivers, landscapes, and wildlife, and demonstrate why working with nature is essential to building climate resilience.
The YCA shared their excitement after the visit: “It was so interesting to see all the specimens, they had so much to tell both of us and we had a great time collaborating in order to create an exhibition which will highlight the importance of our nature!”
Next steps
The YCA and National Museum Wales look forward to unveiling the pop-up exhibition, which will inspire visitors to imagine how a healthier relationship with nature can protect communities and restore ecosystems.
